"Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flow charts. It is about one life influencing another." -John C. Maxwell
Fraternities and sororities require many unique types of leaders, and the beginning of this semester is the perfect time to become a leader in your organization. Being a good leader does not necessitate holding a position on a leadership council, just as holding a position on a leadership council in your chapter does not constitute being a good leader.
When stepping into any type of leadership position, it is important to recognize your own actions first. Good leadership requires the respect of your peers. In large chapters, it may be difficult to get to know every single member, so each member learns you and gives respect to you based on your actions. If you cannot hold yourself to a certain standard, why should you hold the chapter to those standards? Being in a leadership position makes you the face of your chapter, so it is very important to act accordingly.
Being a leader, and being a good leader, requires very different mindsets and techniques. A leader may be someone who demands to get their way and leads by fear. A good leader is selfless, wise, able to inspire others and puts their chapter before themselves. A good leader genuinely believes in the ideals and creed of their chapter, and exudes those ideals through their actions.
It took a very long time for me to realize that there are many different kinds of leadership, and everyone responds to each type differently. It also took me quite a while to realize that you do not have to hold a leadership position in an organization to be a good leader. Leadership is not about being in control. Leadership is the ability to choose the right decisions for your organization by putting the chapter before yourself.
Good leadership is about being selfless, wise, and inspiring. Whether you are the president of your organization, or just another member, it is important to be a good leader in your chapter.
