Being an immigrant isn't what everyone makes it out to be, especially if that immigrant is someone you love.
There are a million different scenarios for why or even how they ended up in the United States. As far as politics, I'm not one to get too deeply into that. But, I will tell you, not everyone's story is the same and not every immigrant has done anything other than living a “normal" life, the best they can.
Now, I know I can't speak for everyone in this situation but with the recent spotlight on 21 Savage I felt someone needed to say something that isn't bashing or belittle immigrants. No, I do not know him but I do understand the situation he is in.
Immigrants are still human with a family who loves them just as you love yours, regardless of how they are grouped or portrayed through politicians or the media.
Why not just get their citizenship if they are such good people you may ask? Well here's why, based off of only my experience.
Watching someone you love dearly try to become a citizen of the United States is one of the hardest things, physically and emotionally. You spend years, in this specific case, 17 to be exact trying to be able to do the basic things Americans are given the right to do everyday. Simple things, we as Americans never think twice about being able to do. Throwing, and I do mean throwing, the little bit of money they do have away. Hundreds of dollars spent on simply receiving paperwork. Lawyers, more money, and most importantly time and then you get the letter. The letter that states you have 33 days to leave the United States. The letter that turns your entire world and everything you know about it upside down.
A little backstory on my spouse, his mother moved here when he was just 3 years old. Yes, 3! He has no memory of our new home and limited knowledge of our new language.
Some people don't get to choose the live they are given, and in this case, my spouse did not. Is he spiteful towards his mother for coming to the US when he was only 3, causing so many issues for him as a child and now a man? No, because she did what was absolutely best for him. Now that the 33 day notice is up, and we are in the Czech Republic with our almost 2 year old daughter, we see why she left. Not because it is not beautiful, but because there is no opportunity here. No opportunity to move up in your position, wherever that may be.
On that note, not everything about this has been awful. The Czech Republic is an amazing place, it’s just not home.
