I'm Vegan... But I'm Just Like You

I'm Vegan... But I'm Just Like You

“If you are a vegan who does crossfit, what do you tell people first?”

“How do you know if a person is vegan? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.”

“The stewardess on a plane asks if there’s a doctor on board when a man has a heart attack. A person raises their hand and says ‘I’m vegan.’”

Vegans have heard all the jokes. Sure, some vegans are VERY proud of being vegan to the point of talking about it loudly and often. As if sparing hundreds of animals’ lives a year and reducing our risk of heart attacks and disease and becoming compassionate is something to be proud of?! Haha, yeah right.

Some vegans are assholes. But some meat eaters are assholes too, and nobody blames it on their diet! We don’t want to fear eating around other people. We shouldn’t have to slip our waitress a note saying “vegan” on it to avoid judgmental stares and questions and comments like “these booths are made of leather and YOU’RE sitting on them so you’re not really vegan!”

I am have no prejudice against meat and dairy eaters. I have friends who are meat eaters. I don’t fear them. I should because if they eat innocent animals, how do I know they won’t eat me? Vegans are tired of living in fear and being mocked.

Times are changing people. There are restaurants dedicated to providing fully vegan menus so we don’t have to ask about the ingredients every time we order. These places will welcome meat eaters with open arms! Vegans WANT other people to embrace veganism. The benefits to animals, our environment, and ourselves are endless. How could you possibly not even consider it? We know, old habits die hard. But would you rather kill a habit or kill animals?

I have a dream that one day, vegans will have their dairy and egg free cake (which, by the way, is the bomb.com) and eat it too. We will not be judged by the fact that when we bite into our food we don’t wish to hear the screams of animals. Rather than making jokes about our lifestyle, the meat and dairy eaters of the world will be open to learning about the joys of a cruelty free diet and lifestyle. We are not just hippies looking for something to make us unique from the rest. We don’t all try to shove our lifestyle down the throats of others to wash away the meat and dairy residue. We don't (always) run around chanting "meat is murder!" We just want to be accepted. We’re sorry if you’re jealous of how healthy and happy we are. Maybe you should go vegan, so you too can feel as awesome as we do all the time.

NO. I do not participate in the heartless killing and raping and torture of animals .

YES. I am proud of that.

Yes. I am vegan. But that’s not the only thing I am.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
