I'm The Girl With The 'Cool Dad'

"What did the buffalo say to his child when he left for college? Bison." - Dad joke.

Let us agree: Dads are interesting creatures.

They are the first man that you meet and have to look up to; the one that will always be there for you no matter what the situation may be. Most dads are pretty awesome. They always have the dad joke to embarrass you (but secretly make you laugh inside). And they love you conditionally.

But I think my dad is cooler than the rest.

Starting from the very beginning, my dad was in a rock and roll band in high school.

(He's the one on the right).

And has continued to play guitar all throughout his life. When I was in elementary school, I thought he was so hip for playing guitar and taking guitar lessons that I wanted to too. And now I've been playing guitar for 10 years. He inspired my love of music. On the way home from school, he would always play unique music that no one has ever heard of. Every oldie, every tribal song, classical, and even bluegrass was played. On the day I was born, he created what we call a "birth song." It is basically the first song he listened to right after I was born. But for me, it inspired me not only to be a musician myself but to understand the diversity and unique quality of music. And for that, I am so grateful. And let's not forget the interesting concerts he's taken me to. For example, I've seen Jason Mraz, Joe Bonamassa, Carlos Santana, Toto, Yes, Sam Smith, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra all in concert because of my dad. He's really good at getting great seats too.

Aside from being an avid musician, I've never met anyone more artistically gifted than my dad. He went to art school in college and even owned a VW Bug just like me. And when he was in his early 20s, he started a marketing company. It's continued to grow for years. He and my mom still own it! Not only can he design stuff on computers, but he can draw stuff by hand and take photos. He also has his private pilots license. The first time I went up with him I was 18 months old.

My dad is a talented dude.

(This one is a Terry B. original).

Now I move on to the way he dresses. No matter what time of year it is, you will always find my dad wearing windbreaker shorts, a fuzzy zip-up sweatshirt, and black leather Crocs. Yes, it could be 25 degrees out (like Michigan usually is) and he's still wearing exactly that. But when he needs to be dressed up, he knows exactly how to do it. An artsy Jerry Garcia tie, a button up, and sleek black pants. He also frequently wears his one hoop earring. He does it true artist style.

He never says no to a selfie, either.

Dad, you have inspired me from the day I was born. You've shown me unconditional love and support in everything I choose to do in life. You're always there for a chat or a hug or whatever I need. You're 100% willing to come get me if I'm uncomfortable. And I know I can always count on you. You've never let me down, and I suspect that you continue to never let me down. Thank you for showing me weird music. Thank you for showing me how a man treats a woman. Thank you for displaying true love for my little brother and I. We will always be thankful for you. Thanks for being the coolest dad ever.

Thank you soooooo much for being my dad. If I had a different dad I would punch him in the face and go find you. I love you, dad.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!
