I'm Stubborn, So What?

Maybe being stubborn is not such a negative thing after all.

I'm Stubborn, So What?

From being a little girl who absolutely refused to wear anything other than my favorite Cinderella slippers out in public to now being absolutely stuck on pursuing my major despite what others say; I have held onto that trait of stubbornness.

When you hear that someone is stubborn, it carries a very negative connotation. People often immediately associate stubbornness with close-mindedness, irrationality, competitiveness, and so forth. However, this is not always the case. Actually, I think my hard-headedness has brought many positives to my life. Here's 3 reasons why being stubborn is not such a bad thing after all:

1. You don't fall victim to peer pressure

Since you are stubborn, you know exactly what you want. It's difficult to sway you because you really know how to hold your ground. You don't have to worry about feeling guilty against your own personal belief system. What's so wrong with that?

2. You're determined to reach your goals

With stubbornness comes determination. You know exactly what you want to achieve in life and you absolutely refuse to settle for less. Even when things seem to be going sour, you persevere because, well, you're stubborn. When Micheal Jordan didn't make his high school's varsity basketball team, he worked hard to develop his skills to make the team. Now he is known as one of the greatest basketball players of our time. Micheal Jordan was too stubborn to accept less than varsity and look where he is at now.

3. You know yourself very well

When you're stubborn, you get to know yourself very well. You know what you're belief system is because you're not easily influenced by the words of others. This does not necessarily mean that you are close-minded. You can still listen take into account the arguments for others' beliefs without necessarily changing yours.

The biggest danger in being stubborn is holding onto potentially harmful or dangerous beliefs. Oftentimes, when we are stubborn we also refuse to learn new things that may simplify our lives. I'm not saying that it's a good thing to be stubborn but I also don't think that it is inherently bad to possess this trait. We all have our downfalls, however, within them lies our strengths.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
