I'm Sick Of The Hate

The hate storm is growing stronger and stronger - it seems like I am witnessing the effects of this election everywhere I turn.

I'm sick of it.

Let me backtrack; I was the quiet one throughout the election as I watched the whirlwind of hate rip around the nation. I chose to stay quiet and silently hold true to my beliefs. But now that the election is over, I am appalled. The hate storm is growing stronger and stronger and it seems like I am witnessing the effects of this election everywhere I turn.

Why can't people be nice?

Your political viewpoints and mine might differentiate, but that does not justify us calling each other awful, nasty names. Why can't we remember that we are all living, breathing humans? Political differences should not affect that.

Why can't people be respectful?

For me personally, one of the most heartbreaking "aftermath" things I've seen is the hatred towards Christians. In the media, we have seen grace and attention given to the LGBT community, to women, and to other religions - But the moment a Christian comes into play, people aren't afraid to openly shred apart their beliefs without remorse. Please do not misunderstand me, I absolutely love people from all walks of life whether they are openly gay or whether their beliefs differ from mine, but I do not understand how one can openly discuss religious freedom yet belittle Christian beliefs.

When will people stop using Jesus' name as an "excuse" to boast themselves?

I'm sick of people using Jesus' name in vain. Not as a swear word, but as an excuse to boost one's political beliefs. "Jesus hates LGBT," or "If Jesus were here, he would vote for Trump". Excuse me, do we know a different Jesus?

I am not speaking for everyone here, but as Christians, we look to the one true King; the King who reigns in our hearts and in our lives. God never promised all rainbows and butterflies in this world as we reside in a sinful world. But the missing link or the bridge is Jesus Christ. The word "Christian" means "Little Jesus", meaning these people were LIKE Jesus.

I've seen many turn their backs away from God in the midst of this election saying, "If God were real, why would he allow this?"

Friends, I love God even more than I thought I could in the midst of this election. Wait, backtrack - What?! This world is temporary and this election is temporary. I love God even more and my faith is even stronger because I know that it breaks His heart to see His people so torn, it breaks His heart to see so much hate, and I'm sure it breaks His heart to see people spend their time and energy worrying about earthly things and not spending our time and energy on furthering His Kingdom. Let's make a conscious effort to show love, whether it be big or small - America needs a whole lotta love right now. I'm so sick of the hate.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
