Family friend: "What is your major?"
Me: "Mass Communication and Journalism with a concentration in Broadcast!" *Big smile on my face*
Family friend: *Blank stare and silence*
This happens way too often and to be honest it gets kind of annoying...
I decided my freshman year of high school that I loved photography and anything to do with being behind a camera. Being in front of it is fun as well. Throughout the years my love of photography has grown into me owning my own business and doing it on the side. That love transferred into a love for journalism and videography as well. As many high school students go into college they don't know what they want to do, however, that was not the case for me. Starting my sophomore year of high school I knew exactly what I was majoring in. Although it wasn't anything to do with education, the medical field, biology or even law, it’s my passion and I know I will be happy doing it for the rest of my life.
So for those of you that think people only study Journalism because they want to take the 'easy' way out you are completely wrong. Journalism is a difficult major and to be honest I have more work and exams than some of my friends who chose those "hard classes."
Honestly I put so much of my time and effort into my major it feels like I don't ever have a chance to sit back and relax. From writing papers to interviewing famous people I love what I do and have a big smile on my face everyday that I am doing it.
I get excited about going out and spending a day videoing someone and going back to edit the video and write an article over it. Just like chemistry major’s when they get excited to go to the lab for different experiments. I love what I do and I'm tired of getting all of those funny looks and moments of silence just because someone thinks that Journalism is 'easy'.
So, please when I tell you what my major is stop acting like I took the easy way out by giving me that funny look. I spend everyday learning about what I love and working myself to death until I receive my degree and achieve my goals.
