Though my team's season ended a lot earlier than I would have preferred, and it sure didn't go as planned, I am perfectly content in this postseason. Why?
This postseason I have had the opportunity to just be a fan. I don't mean in the way that I usually am, cheering on my team throughout the entirety of Major League Baseball's long, exhausting yet exciting season. What I mean is, this year, I've gotten to just be a fan of baseball.
I love baseball. I'm not a Cubs fan, but being in the middle of the territory that is typically ruled by the Cardinals vs. Cubs rivalry I've been able to pull for a team that almost all of my friends and family have pulled for since they were old enough to speak the magical word "baseball".
Needless to say, seeing elderly family members in the area who have a special connection with their team finally having the ultimate success in the form of a World Series? That's been something special. So special, in fact, I've almost entirely forgotten about the fact that this is a team that rivals my own favorite. So I can honestly say the following:
For the sake of my friends, family, those who have waited their whole lives hopeful that one day they'd see the underdogs of the Windy City get to hoist the World Series, I want the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series.
Sure, there will be a lot of people who criticize me, but that's fine. There are a lot of people who could either care less about the playoffs now that their teams are out and also people who still want to see the Cubs drop out at the end of the year. However, there are a lot of us who would like to see the Cubs pull it off in this series against Cleveland. I've seen fans from all over the country, and even in other areas of the world, all pull together for the perennial underdog to come into their own. From New York to Los Angeles, people love what they are witnessing. An organization typically known for their lack of success in the playoffs in recent years has finally begun to give their fans hope. Those of us whom follow the game or are paid to follow closely have seen it coming for years now.
Though we aren't the die-hard Cubs fans we know and typically argue with, and we won't celebrate the same way that those fans will, some of us will be happy to see the team's loyal fan base be rewarded. Even though we may be fans of other teams, we admit that this should be the Cubs' year.
The team has been the best by far. Just like the city they stand for, and the city that stands behind them, no matter what struggles they have faced, they've come out on top of them. Triumphant.
So Cubs players, enjoy your moments in the Championship. Nothing is guaranteed, but everything is yours for the taking.
And Cubs fans, for one time, we will all enjoy it with you. We're pulling for you on this one. Cheer your hearts out, and show the players the energy you've pent up for all these years.
Call me a trader, or say that I "Don't support my team for real" (Those of you who know me know that isn't true in the least). I truly can't believe I'm saying this, and you likely won't ever hear me utter these words again, but for me?
Go Cubs Go.
And Good luck Chi-town. This one is for your fans, they've waited long enough this time.
