I’m Not A Beach Girl

I don’t like the beach, and I’m ok with it

Point Pleasant Beach

I’m not a huge fan of the beach... I haven’t even been to a real beach in years- just the man made beach on Lake George. I'm sure if I wanted to go to the ocean I could, just a simple 3 hour drive. But I don’t like the beach.

Don’t get me wrong, there is something nice about laying in the hot sun and doing nothing for a few hours followed by a dip in some salty water and some ice cream is nice. I’m not denying that... and I’m not denying that in the middle of an up-state New York winter I don’t sometimes team of being a warm tropical beach. But in actuality, the beach is not the place for me.

I’m not even sure where to start my list of (unpopular) reasons why I avoid the beach... theres the outfits, the sunburns, the endless sand you find in your bag after words, the people in your personal space.... the list is seemingly endless!

1. Bathing Suits

Bathing suits... aka the outfits we buy in a new style each spring to only wear a handful of times! Not eveyone wants to parade around a public place in clothing that covers little more than underwear. And thats awesome if you are comfortable with that... but after you battle your own self esteem and get to the beach, you are surrounded by a throng of people looking, judging, and giving their un-solisited opinions. But in all reality... I am not too interested in being friends with someone who is judging me on my bathing suit.

2. Sunburns

When you are fair skinned, and from the cloudy land of up-state New York, your skin is not too used to the sun! Subsequently, no matter what time of day, how sunny, the temperature, if I wear sunscreen, or the SPF of the sunscreen, I absolutely always get burnt. I’m not taking a little bit of pink on my cheeks... I’m talking about bright red, full body, painful, peeling sunburns. It take weeks to fully go away- after it itches and peels!

3. Sand

It’s the beach... theres a lot off sand... I get that! But no matter how carful I am, I always end up bringing home a tote bag plus a car full of sand! Leaving the beach pretty much means rinsing your feet off in the ocean and they get re-covered worse than before on the walk back to the car! And don’t even get me started on all the sand that is in your hair from the wind blowing, and laying on the beach. So pretty much your going to be finding sand in your hair, bag, car, and behind your ears for weeks!

4. The Stuff

You have to bring so much with you to the beach! It takes forever to get it all together, and by caring it all the way to your plot of beach and get it set up practically half of your beach time is over. Theres so much to bring.... blankets, towels, umbrellas, snacks, games books, toys, boogie boards.... the list goes on and on.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
