February 14th is either a day to love, or a day to loathe. It is expected that those who don't like Valentine's Day are single and bitter and those who love the holiday are in a relationship. Well, this couldn't be more untrue.
I am in a relationship, and I hate Valentine's Day.
I never liked Valentine's Day, mostly because I was single and couldn't stand seeing all of these happy couples around. I was that bitter, angsty teenager that would refer to it as "Single's Awareness Day." Seriously, that was me. I would always say that once I found someone to spend the holiday with, I wouldn't hate it as much. Once I found someone that made Valentine's Day worth celebrating, it would become a favorite holiday of mine.
Well, I found him. I found my valentine! The first holiday was about as mushy as you could get. I baked him cookies, made some chocolates, the whole nine. I knew this would be the beginning of me loving this holiday. Then we spent a few more together (we are going on our seventh one together this year ), and to be honest, I still hate it. No, I'm not in a miserable relationship if that's what you're thinking. On the contrary, I'm in a great relationship.
So, why do I hate Valentine's Day if I have a valentine? Ask someone what Valentine's Day is all about. Better yet, as a kid what it's all about. You'll get the same answer. "It's the day where you show your significant other how much you love them." That's it? You can only show your significant other how much you love and care about them on a random day in February? Why? Because Hallmark and Russel Stover says so?
This is why I hate Valentine's Day, and please don't get me wrong, this does not go for every couple out there. You shouldn't show that person in your life how much they mean to you only on one day. You need to show how much you appreciate and love them every damn day. It's not that hard to show affection and love. There are couples who love Valentine's Day, and do appreciate each other every day and that's great! But there are also others that don't and make it like they are head over heels for each other once the 14th rolls around.
No, I am not single. But yes, I don't like Valentine's Day. Does that make me a Valentine Scrooge? Probably. But I am entitled to my own opinion. Will I still "celebrate" it with my boyfriend? Yeah, we'll get dinner and probably end up on his couch watching a movie like we every week. We'll celebrate our love, not the holiday, like we do every day.
