I'm A Girl And I Understand Football

You're wrong.

I'm A Girl And I Understand Football
Palm Beach Post

To the girl who said we can't understand football: for your information, I’m a girl and I do understand football. I understand lots of sports, actually. No, I’ve never played ‘real’ football or many other sports, but that doesn’t mean I’m not able to understand them. Just because someone is a Public Relations major does that mean they can’t understand the quadratic formula or how to file taxes? No. It just means that they might have to pay a little more attention than an accountant would.

I would not consider myself a feminist, not even close actually, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think girls are capable of doing what guys do. I definitely think a girl can understand the complexity of football, just like guys do. But for us it’s better, because we DON’T play. So I do take offense in you saying that “girls can’t understand football because we don’t play.”

Also, don’t say can’t. Don’t ever say can’t. Any girl can understand football or any other sport for that matter. Just because you probably didn’t play any sports throughout your lifetime, doesn’t mean others didn’t and cant understand them like you can’t. I grew up with all boys, so needless to say football was huge in our household. It’s America’s sport. Try actually watching the game rather than shot gunning beers to impress the frat boys and taking cute, stadium pics to keep your Instagram levels up.

Not only did I grow up in a football household, but in a football town. If you Google Belle Glade, FL, you will find 3 results: agriculture, “Muck City”, and football. Besides the agriculture, football is what makes this town. We have 60+ players that have been or are currently playing in the NFL. Just to drop a few names: Fred Taylor, Santonio Holmes, Ray McDonald, Kelvin Benjamin, Anquan Boldin, Deonte Thompson, Jenoris Jenkins. That’s huge. Recruiters come out to us all the time watching our boys play. Urban Meyer even called us “the fastest place in the entire country.” Ever heard of the Muck Bowl? Well it’s one of the fiercest, high school rivalries in the country. This is primetime for not only players, but scouts as well. Urban Meyer, Bobby Bowden, Nick Saban, and Will Muschamp are just a few head coaches who have traveled down our way. This is where dreams come true.

Football is a lifestyle back home, which made it a lifestyle for me. There was no such thing as a day off. On any given Sunday, you could find boys out in the cane fields chasing rabbits to gain speed. Sounds easy right? Nope. They have an average speed of 35mph, usually more. If you could catch a rabbit, you can catch anybody. If you can hold onto that rabbit, you can hold onto anything. Don’t believe me? Watch this. Still don’t believe me? Read this.

So yes, I know things about football. It’s America’s sport. It’s not hard to understand what a screen play is or what a safety does. So my advice to you is to actually watch the game next time. Oh, and speak for yourself.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
