Valentine's Day can be hard. When you don't have a Significant Other to celebrate with, you can often find yourself awkwardly sitting alone in the dining hall or crying into a thing of chocolate mousse while watching Netflix. Let's change that.
My previous dating-centered article -- titled "I'm 18, I've Never Been On A Date, And I Can Be Ok With That" -- focused on the fact that I was waiting for the right guy who loved The Lord to come sweep me off my feet (which is still true), but my outlook on the whole situation has changed a bit since September. I realized that I'm focusing way too much on relationships and sometimes it literally feels like it's suffocating me to have all these self-deprecating thoughts about the fact that I'm single. (Shout out to my mom who reminded me that I am only 18 -- I'm not an old maid). While love between human beings is a very vital part of life, there's so much more out there to do! When was the last time you read a book you've been eyeing? Or painted your nails, or had a spa night with your gal pals? We're in college! This time should be about trying crazy, new things and being unapologetic in figuring out which way the rest of our lives will play out.
Valentine's Day wasn't even originally about romance. Saint Valentine (who is the most notable of the Valentine's at the time of the holiday's creation) was arrested after performing the weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to wed, and for ministering to the Christians being persecuted by the Roman empire. So this day that now revolves around roses, chocolate, and sappy cards began with some pretty kick-butt people.
All that being said, I know that it's still difficult to face another Valentine's Day alone. In Matthew 6, he says "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life... Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
This is talking a little bit more about physical needs, but I think it can apply to other areas of our lives as well. The birds always find food, and the plants that we see every day have enough rain and sunlight to grow. Matthew is telling us that we're so much more important than the birds and the flowers -- God will take care of us! Later on in the chapter, he goes on to say "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well."
There's a quote I've heard before that talks about us dancing with God and that He'll let the right man cut in. I know that even though waiting for the right guy is super hard, and sometimes painful, finding him and getting to spend the rest of our lives with him will be so rewarding! If we chase after The Lord wholeheartedly, He will provide for us in ways that we would never even think of otherwise.
So don't worry this Valentine's Day if you don't have a date. I'm hanging out with some friends the day before (on Galentine's Day). Just remember that the God of the universe thinks you're beautiful and that you're more than worth it. Be confident, treat yourself, and just have fun!
Chloe-approved Galentine's Day Entertainment
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (those ladies never disappoint)
Instead of focusing on the Avengers, this show's about the agents of the organization. The girls on this show are the coolest.
H2O: Just Add Water (even if you're over 12, it's still good. Trust me.)
Mermaids, powers, and defeating evil. It's a classic.
"Once I Was a Beehive"
This movie's about a girl who's dealing with her dad's death and mom's remarriage and goes to a Mormon summer camp. This has got tons of girl bonding, fun times, and is a great feel-good movie.
Any Disney Princess movie
'Nuff said.
Any Jane Austen book-turned-movie.
Perfect for any hopeless romantic - these movies are full of heroines overcoming different obstacles. I love them!
