In the process of balancing school, work, and a social life the most negative parts of us sometimes come to light. Under the continuous pressures and stress that is highly prevalent in a college student's daily routine can be an underlying want for such feelings. No, I'm not including those students who sacrifice and strive for better on a day to day routine. Those same students that spend their weekends at work and their weekdays from the crack of dawn in class and until midnight doing homework. Those are students that focus their energy towards the future and as much as they are commendable, the fact that their present does not get as much attention as their unstable future is when they have ruined themselves.
Apart from these high achievers, there are those that shoot low, instances in which we push ourselves towards procrastination even when there is practically nothing of actual value or entertainment to take part in. It makes the work we are scheduled to do much more important in a way by adding on all this stress we are able to distant ourselves from the ease that ties into time management. But let's all be real, many students aren't actually going to sacrifice our social life for that extra hour of studying, we would much rather take that 60 minutes and hangout with our friends. As much as that seems lazy, and almost ineffective at producing a successful future, each have their flaws that eventually when it becomes habitual becomes their crutch.
We are either so focused on the future or living in the moment that we forget to balance them both. Not only is it ineffective in the long run, but highly detrimental towards our mental health. Those that push themselves over the edge for the fear of being poor in the future create unhealthy spaces full of stress and fear that they become overwhelmed almost feeling that they are being prodded at repeatedly to succeed. On the other hand, there are individuals that choose a more relaxed way at first because instead of fearing upcoming failure they are are more afraid of the success that could prosper from perseverance. They give up on the idea of such success and settle for what seems safe which is only bound by limitations of the mind and societal pressures that push these same ideas forward. The first step to break such a complacent norm is to reevaluate what we choose to value.
