I'll Get There When I Get There

And when I do, I want to say that I have lived

We all get asked the same questions in our lifetime about what we want to do when we are older. We are expected to know what we want to do for the rest of our lives before we even graduate high school. And honestly, I had thought I had it all figured out with my dream career and everything seemed just fine. That was until I had really thought about and had experienced jobs and different classes. Now I bouncing between majors and other life decisions. I, in a way, realized it is okay not to know your whole life in your early 20's. While you are in college, it’s your time to explore and find out who you truly are, even if that does mean doing unbelievably senseless yet life-exploring things.

The constant pressure and assumptions that people will make about your future has to stop. And if it doesn’t, do everything in your power to not listen. I believe, that while, in your late teen years and early twenties, it is acceptable to do everything and anything that you set your heart to.

Date the boy that will make your heart race, even if he does have tattoos and your mother doesn’t approve. Do everything in your power now to get your blood pumping. Life is made for you to fall in love, but also to get your heart broken; it’s all a part of learning.

Go on a crazy road trip with your closest friends. You’ll learn so much about yourself and your friends while on the craziest adventures, on the open road. Take that semester in Spain to learn about their culture. The world is yours to explore, and it won’t always be as open when you are working and have kids to worry about. Go while you are free and can explore with your heart and mind on the adventure.

Go out, drink, and stay out all night. Before you have to come home and pay the babysitter for staying with your children. Take fun pictures with your friends that you might be too scared to post because of judgement from your parents and their friends. Be crazy and take chances, you’ll never know if or when you will get those experiences again.

I always get asked about what I feel I will be doing when I’m older and the only possible answer is “I’ll get there when I get there”. Be stupid, be free, it’s the only chance that we have to do so. Once you graduate from college and get that degree, the real world will slap you in the face, and you have to really take your future and life serious then. Life is full of possibilities while you are in your twenties. Don’t let the fear of your future hold you back from living your life to the absolute fullest, while you still have the chance.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
