I'll Do it When Things Get Back to Normal

"Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated" -Confucius

Something important I've learned about life is that there is no such thing as, and never will be such thing as, normal. Things will "never get back to normal". If you keep telling yourself you'll do something when things are normal the reality is, you'll probably never do that thing.

"Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking" -Marcus Aurelius

That thing, whether it's taking a yoga class or starting to workout, is only going to become a part of your life at the cost of something else. Everything has a cost. That's a major principle in the business world; there's no such thing as a free lunch, basic economics. There is a cost to everything. If you want to take that yoga class then that means you have to sacrifice the time you could have been doing something else. That could be your homework, working for money, sleeping, hanging out with friends etc.

"The truth is you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed" -Eminem

Something I find myself saying a lot I that once things get back to normal I'll start doing this certain thing again or I'll start a brand new thing. I'll start working out again and start hanging out with a new friend. What that really means is that I'm using my situation as a scapegoat. The reality is is that one season of your life is never going to line up with another season of your life. Things change, friends come and go, people come in and out of your life, habits come and go, routines form and break, it's just how life works. If we get so caught up in perfecting that schedule or restoring it to how it used to be we will miss out on a ton of other valuable things.

So what does that mean?

That means stop making excuses and go do that new thing. Go to the cycling club, start hanging out with that person you never ended up hanging out with, even if that means missing out on sleep. Even if that means missing out on XYZ. Life is just constantly cutting things out and pasting things in. Anything in this world will fade and if we try to hang on to those things we will fade along with them. To have a normal life in essence is to have a life that is not normal at all. Most people's lives are anything but normal, but thats what makes them normal. If we can learn to succumb to the changing nature of this world and subscribe to a greater ideology that welcomes constant change, I think we might be alright.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
