I'll Be There For You

Sister's Weekend.

It's a weekend that I look forward to every year. Not only do I get to have an entire weekend with my little sister to myself, but we get to bond, do a little prom dress shopping, eat junk, and annoy each other without getting yelled at. I also get to prove to her that choosing to attend the University of Illinois will be the best decision she will ever make. It’s simple. My little sister is my best friend, and when you get to spend an entire weekend with your best friend, it’s a good time.

My sorority’s theme for Sister’s Weekend this year was "Friends." There was an adorable themed photo booth with quotes, and a big yellow picture frame and our shirts were adorable. It was perfect. And while I quoted my favorite episodes all weekend, my mind kept returning to the lyrics in their theme, “I’ll be there for you.”

I have taken great joy in observing how talented, selfless, beautiful, sassy, smart, confident, amazing, and driven that my sister has become. I am incredibly proud of the young woman that she is growing up to be. My little sister is a blessing in my life, and I am truly thankful Mom and Dad decided that they needed one more kid.

She is hands down one of the biggest reasons I get up every morning and strive to live every day to the best of my ability. Every day, I hope to set an example just for her. I hope that through my words and actions, I can inspire her to live a life that is completely sold out for Christ and full of laughter and vigor… Because really, that is the only way to live life. Love Jesus. Be happy. The rest will fall into place.

As she continues to grow up and become her own person, I hope that she will remember Romans 12:6-8. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Hannah, HE has a plan for you. And it’s marvelous. Use your wonderful gifts that God has given you! Show the world how special you are. And never, ever forget… I’ll be there for you.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
