September 23 is a day that went down in white-girl-comedy history. We waited for a year (over a year, really) for Iliza Shlesinger to release her new comedy special on Netflix, and we were not disappointed. Her ability to address social issues and infuse them with her unique sense of humor makes her a comedy power house. In Confirmed Kills, she confronts body issues, sexual harassment, the oh-so-confusing world of dating, and so much more.
The show started with our favorite sassy canine, Blanche, running across the stage in a red dress making us all wish we were that fabulous. Then Iliza came out rocking an all black ensemble that I instantly coveted. Her makeup, hair, everything was on point, but that quickly became irrelevant as her words (rightfully) stole the show.
If you've seen her previous specials (Freezing Hot and War Paint), you know she utilizes hashtags throughout her performance. I'll highlight some important ones from Confirmed Kills for you. #PartyGoblin made a comeback because we all have one that tells us to "eat the sandwich out of the trashcan and text your ex that you love him." #SometimesToFeelAHumanEmotionILikeToDrinkMyOwnHair you'll just have to watch it to understand this one. There are some that I figure are too inappropriate to put here, which is why you should go watch it and see for yourself. And obviously #ConfirmedKills because Pip Pop just doesn't give a f***.
One of the most important subjects she talked about was sexual harassment and how men deem it okay to yell disgusting and offensive things at women because generally we don't have the body strength to fight back. My favorite quote: "You can wear whatever you want. It doesn't give someone the right to treat you like an animal." She also addressed the stigma placed on single women. "Why are you single?" "Because the last one was a d***, and I'm not stupid!" Mermaids were also a big topic in this special. It correlated with her points about women's body images and how we all need to stop making everything a competition and be confident in ourselves.
On a side note, she has a show on ABC called Forever 31 that everyone needs to go watch ASAP. Also, she has a book coming out in 2017 called Girl Logic that I'll be pre-ordering immediately.
If you haven't discovered the wonderful world of the stand-up comedy specials on Netflix, start here. Start now. Drop what you're doing like Iliza dropped that mic, and go watch Confirmed Kills ASAP.
