This is the question I have been continuously asked in my first year at Ohio State. To be completely honest, as a senior in high school, I had absolutely no clue. All I knew was that I didn’t want to go to Michigan State with half of my graduating class and that the other awful school up north wasn’t really my style.
Thus began the searching for a school that would set me up for a greatest adventure of my life. I knew I wanted to go to a Big Ten school that had a killer football team and still excelled academically. I also wanted somewhere that was only a drive from home and not a plane ride. So, I toured OSU and realized upon 20 minutes of being here that I wanted to be here. I had no idea the actual reasoning but chose to come here anyway. It wasn’t until months later while actually living out my college experience that I understood why I needed to be here.
I needed to be here for the reasons not spoken in the tour. I needed to come to Ohio State to meet my roommate and neighbors on my floor that I can come home to and cry when I fail a test or that will have a dance party with me because we needed to take a break from studying. I needed to come to OSU because the teachers here actually care, and although it’s the biggest school in the nation, I still feel as though I matter even in a lecture hall the size of Independence. I needed to come here to find Catfish Biff’s and be able to binge eat it after coming home late on a Saturday night. I needed to come to Ohio State so after every victory we have over Michigan I can text my brother (who goes to Michigan) and dad and rub it in their faces.
There are a lot of reasons why I thought I wanted to go to Ohio State, but the truth is the reasons why I decided to come here I didn’t discover until I already started college. And the best part about it is that I have another three years to find a million more reasons to why Ohio State needed to be my home.
