5 Things Your Server Wants You To Know

Not everyone understands the etiquette of working in a restaurant but read this and you will.

For those who have been in or worked at a restaurant before, you will understand where I am coming from. I have been working in the food industry for three years and over these past few years I have seen so much that most people wouldn't believe.

I am a 19 year old girl and I have been yelled at multiple times for circumstances that were beyond my control. I have had people scream and walk out of the restaurant like young children in the bodies of 50 year olds.

Don't get me wrong, some people are gracious, and patient and sweet to those who are serving them food but others...not so much.

Here is a list of some of the biggest pet peeves I have and I am sure other people share from working in a restaurant.

1. If you come in on a Friday night with 8 of your closest friends and the place is packed don't expect to get seated right away. When I tell you we are booked and you get upset with me, it's not my fault you forgot to make a reservation. All I can do is give you an estimated wait time of 30-45 minuets. If that is too long for you please don't yell at me, just walk out and find somewhere else to eat.

2. When we have a line of people that we are trying to check in and get seated, don't feel free to seat yourself. You will confuse us and the managers and the servers and throw off all the seating. We are not Dennys. You need to wait in line, be checked in, and then we will take you to the open table for the TWO of you, not the table that is set for SIX.

3. We just told you that your table is ready and you have been hanging out at the bar drinking. If you can not get up and walk to your table without stumbling maybe you should stay at the bar and drink some water.

4. If you come in on the weekend at night to a BISTRO (it is loud and a fun atmosphere) and you complain about it being too loud, there is nothing I can do to stop the noise. The place is packed, the bar is 'poppin' and nobody wants to turn the music down. If you are going to complain maybe you should pick a different place or get your food to go.

5. Okay this one is one of my biggest peeves. When someone comes in on a busy night and they know there won't be a table for them. They are also waiting on 5 other people to join them and they ask for the wait time. When we tell them 30-45 minutes they get livid and request to speak to the manager as if you are hiding a table from them so they can't eat dinner. All while you try to calm them down they pull the "I know the owner" card so "seat us now or he will be getting a phone call from us." The owner has no control on if we have a table available.

If you have worked in a restaurant you get why this is so annoying and if you come into a restaurant please please be aware of it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
