When I first heard about "Stranger Things," I didn’t even know what people were talking about -- all of a sudden, all my social media profiles, BuzzFeed, and so many others news/entertainment outlets were ecstatic over it, and I had no idea what it even was. After some research, I found out it was a Netflix series and checked out its trailer. To be quite honest, I wasn’t convinced by it. I’m not a fan of science fiction, and couldn’t quite understand the story by the trailer, and decided I was going to wait a little more to decide whether or not I should watch it.
A little over a week went by and since I was deeply dissatisfied with the lack of enticing TV shows for me to watch (miss you, "Game of Thrones"), I decided to give "Stranger Things" a shot. If you haven’t watched it yet, finish reading the article and do it. It is beyond amazing.
The plot itself is hard to talk about without giving any spoilers away, but I’ll just say that strange things start happening in the little town of Hawkins, Indiana, and the reason behind these occurrences is even more serious than anyone would have initially suspected. A little boy named Will disappears, and his three friends embark on a mission to find him. So does his mother, played by Winona Ryder, and people start to think she’s losing her mind. A mysterious girl called Eleven shows up.
There are so many storylines to be absolutely enthralled by, you can choose to focus on Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Eleven, and their quest for the truth. Or on Chief Hopper, Joyce and Jonathan Byers as they look for Will. There’s Nancy’s storyline too, which makes the story a little more relatable for the average audience member but is still thrilling nonetheless. You can choose to spend those eight episodes trying to figure out what exactly is going on.
The series was so immaculately made, that you feel like you’ve traveled back to the '80s. From the costumes, to the props, soundtrack, a whole other world and atmosphere is created -- those who lived the '80s will be nostalgic, those who didn’t will be curious and amazed. The acting is spectacular, especially considering the protagonists are, arguably, the children (Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, deserves a special shout out, but she’s not the only amazing one in the cast). The special effects are so realistic I would avoid eating while watching the show just in case my stomach churned. The characters themselves are extremely three-dimensional, and there are moments where you find yourself sympathizing with characters who you normally hate simply because of the writers’ and actors’ skills of revealing their many facets.
Everything about "Stranger Things" is gripping. It’s the kind of show that makes you want to have your eyes glued to your screen every minute, an impressive feat for episodes which are almost one hour long. I’m craving for more, and want to make my mother watch it just so I can re-watch it with her. So, if you’ve been putting off watching it, go on netflix.com right now and treat yourself, you deserve it, and the people behind "Stranger Things" deserve it too.
