If You Don't Want To Attend Ole Miss, Don't Visit
Mary Claire McGraw

Ole Miss is that amazing school located in Oxford, Mississippi that you have probably heard people talking about like it's some great, fairy-tale land. You might think it's overrated if you've never really been -- trust me -- I was once one of those people. But once you visit, you realize that every good thing you've ever heard about it is true, and actually, it's even greater than people described. So, if you have your heart set on another school, or for whatever reason you just really don't want to, or can't one day attend The University of Mississippi, you should probably stop reading this now. Also, if you don't want to go Ole Miss, definitely do not visit...

Don't visit the Square... Don't eat at Ajax or Old Venice Pizza. Don't wander into any of the quaint little book stores. Don't even window shop at the adorable boutiques and shops. And don't go get ice cream at YaYa's... unless you want to move here. Don't go shopping at the cute antique stores -- which have literally furnished and decorated my apartment, by the way. They will also have you too imagining having your own decorated house in Oxford.

Don't even step one foot on campus. If you HAVE to drive by, just close your eyes. Because if you don't, you won't be able to resist the beauty that is Ole Miss. ABSOLUTELY do not go for a walk in The Grove... the atmosphere just walking on campus through The Grove, past the Union, around the Circle and Lyceum, it's like nothing you've ever imagined. Don't tailgate in The Grove either, we've literally been named the best tailgating college, like ever. "We ain't never lost a party!" - that's for sure;) Oh, and don't go to a game in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium... you'll be bleeding red and blue before you even realize it.

Don't talk to people, they're too nice. Don't visit the historic sites in Oxford, they're too interesting. Don't do anything in Oxford really. In fact, if you really are dead set on not coming to Ole Miss for college, don't even drive through Oxford. Detour if at all possible.

Oxford is just a place that -- and I quote from actual sayings -- "gets in your blood and stays forever." I've only lived here maybe three months and this already couldn't be more true. Ole Miss is literally one great big family and it reminds me so much of a bit larger version of my hometown and high-school. I am so excited for my future here and I know this is exactly where I am meant to be. I always said I didn't want to go to Ole Miss, until I visited at the very end of my senior year. At that point, I was already dedicated to another school, but one year later, I applied to Ole Miss and moved five hours away to Oxford soon after. One visit will make five hours (or way more for some) seem like nothing. Because when you're in Oxford, and you go to Ole Miss, no matter where you're from, YOU. ARE. HOME.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
