The recent inauguration of President Donald Trump has brought up intense feelings for a lot of people. I've seen people be 100 percent for him and I've also seen people hate him with every fiber of their being.
Lately, I've stayed fairly quiet on all things political for a reason: I simply haven't had anything nice to say. I have refused to be someone who starts an argument over something that is out of my control. I cannot change someone's opinion nor can they change mine. We can only educate each other. I see no reason to get into an argument over opinions. I see friends and family posting constantly about "Not My President," "NOBAMA," or "Crooked Hillary," and honestly, none of it is OK. Why should we tear this country apart further and risk causing irreparable damage? I can't stand for any of it.
As a gay Latina, you can probably assume my vote, and you would be right — I didn't vote for Trump. Here's the catch, though: I realize that President Donald Trump holds the future of the free world in his hands. We as a country must put aside our differences and stand together to become a nation united once again. We can't keep tearing one another down. As much as I didn't want President Trump to be in office, I hope that he proves me wrong. I hope that he will not disappoint us as Americans. I hope that the right choice was made.
All of this being said, I want to make sure it is known that I wholeheartedly support my friends and family who marched this past weekend. They are right to fight for equality and that's what the marches were all about. From what I've seen, it has been nothing but peaceful protests. My heart is so happy with the fact there are people out there standing in the cold, screaming "Women's rights are human rights! Gay rights are human rights!" People from all races, backgrounds, sexualities, and genders came together to bring attention to the issues that need to be fixed. They came together as equals and I am grateful for that small victory.
I encourage everyone to keep these thoughts in their heads, to always focus on the positives instead of the negatives, and remember the golden rule: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
