Who Are You?

You're a Child of God

Who Are You?

Many people spend their whole lives not knowing who they really are. They travel far and wide to "discover themselves" and might try things like meditation to find who they are. Let me just tell you, as fun as a vacation sounds, I don't have to travel very far to know who I really am, and neither do you!

Romans 8:14-16 says:

"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father'. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."

That's who you are! You are a child of God! Even if you don't know it yet, it is God's intention to show you the revelation of your sonship or daughtership (if that's a word). His heart is after his children. Why do you think He sent His son to die for your sins. It wasn't just so you could be in heaven one day, it was because He wanted you to live an abundant life (John 10:10) in full connection with Him.

Psalms 84:10 says:

"Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper at the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked"

The writer of this Psalm understood that there is nothing like being with the Father, and when he was writing this it was much harder to be near to God under the law of Moses. How much better and fuller is our closeness with God now that we have Jesus as the bridge between us and our loving heavenly father. There is nothing better than living a life close to him, in his presence.

Once you have come into the full realization that you are a child of God and have experienced the fullness of his love for the first time, it changes everything. You become a man or woman of purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11 says:

"For I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, ' plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

You have purpose in life! You were not created just to sit around and be a passive player in life, because you are a child of God. In His eyes you are not worthless, hopeless or a failure. He speaks purpose and identity into you. It's the nature of His heart.

God is faithful. If we draw near to His heart, He will draw near to us and we will know him more intimately (James 4:8). The closer you get to God, the more you see who God is. The more you see who God is, the more you see yourself the way he sees you. The more you begin to see yourself the way he sees you, then you begin to see your purpose, destiny, and identity in him.

Find out who you really are. Get closer to God! He loves you and has a purpose for your life, not matter who you are or what you have done. Your identity is in Him!

If you want to talk to someone about God's love for you and step into more of that, come by the Stone Lodge on UNA's campus Sundays at 8:00 p.m. for Encounter: Word or Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. for Encounter: Worship.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
