Every individual is unique. Different in his/her own way. But what exactly makes each of these individuals different from each other? What are the elements that make these individuals' Identities unique? Identity is defined as the characteristics that makes a person who they are. This set of characteristics can evolve over time either by moving to a new society or socializing with people from different cultural backgrounds. Our identity is not bound to one thing that identities us as a person, but an accumulation of several things that are subject to change. The most essential components that makes up our identity is truly one's cultural background, including one's race and ethnicity. Although discrimination may not always be the case, people tend to be identify others by their race, language spoken, or cultural beliefs. The executive director mentioned in the class discussion, provides an excellent example of an individual being identified by their race. Whether the director was a rich man or the head of many employees, the police only identified him because he of his race: African American. Different races also hold different cultural groups which people may identify themselves a part of. As a child, I've attended many Indian cultural events where everyone of the same cultural background come together to share their beliefs and carry on traditions. Of course these events are now a part of my identify since I embrace my culture with a community of individuals who have the same cultural background as I do. So what makes an individual unique? There are many components that add to an individual's unique identity like environment, family, gender and religion, but the most essential element identified is Cultural background, including race and ethnicity.
