Como Tener Un Dormitorio Hogareño
Kimberly Gonzalez

After a year of being a college student, I have mastered the art of making my room feel like home. While it may seem like the time spent decorating the dorm could be better spent studying for an organic chemistry exam coming up, it is important to create a safe space for yourself. Your dorm room can help prevent homesickness and can inspire or motivate you when you are feeling down! For that reason, this list contains some insight on dorm decoration ideas.

1. One picture a day can keep homesickness away.

One creative way to keep yourself from missing home, family and friends is to create a picture wall. It can add lots of color and liveliness to the dorm for only a small amount of money. All you need are some sturdy branches, command hooks, twine, crazy glue and pictures!

2. Posters.

Anything is better than a dorm full of empty white walls which is why posters can be so useful. You can decorate your room with posters of anything you want. I chose to decorate with posters about social justice because it reminds me of what motivates me everyday.

3. Bean bag chairs to sit on.

Having a bean bag or nice chair to sit on is not only good so that you do not get tired of sitting in the same hard chair that the university provides for you but it also invites other guests in! If there are places to sit, your friends are more likely to hang out in your dorm.

4. Have some aspect of nature in your room.

After moving to the east coast and experiencing a cold and snowy winter for the first time, I decided I would have plants in my room. This can help those who love nature or come from places where winter does not mean plants wither away for a few months.

5. Have something that reminds you of who you are.

As a Chicana from SoCal, I have always been around my culture so it was difficult coming to Hopkins and not seeing faces that looked like mine. This inspired me to decorate my room with traditional Mexican art and colors not only to remind me of who I am but to show others how proud I am of my heritage.

6. String lights!

Even though this is very typical decoration in college dorms, these lights really add a warm and happy feeling to the dorm. To make them more unique you can buy the lights with clips to attach pictures on them.

7. Invest in air fresheners.

The smell in your room can affect your mood which is something to think about when you are feeling stressed. I invested in a plug in scented oil freshener my freshman year which keeps my room smelling sweet like vanilla all the time.

8. Don't be afraid to have a childhood blanket or teddy bear!

It is always nice to have something to comfort you especially during those tough midterms and finals weeks.

9. Get yourself a coffee maker.

If you need your daily dose of coffee like me, it can be a great idea to invest in a coffee maker so that you can have it close and ready anytime.

10. Be creative!

Do whatever it takes for your dorm room to be that space you are excited to get to at the end of a long day. That could be by creating a small library of your favorite books, having a space for a yoga mat or having glow in the dark stars all over the ceiling. It does not matter how you decorate your room as long as you create a small home away from home.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
