Betsy DeVos has just recently been confirmed as the individual to fill the Secretary of Edication position. This has filled most people involved in the education system with shock, dread, and possibly even anger. This woman is someone with no political experience at all, much like President Trump, and does not even have any experience dealing with the public school system at all. She does not even have any knowledge of how student loans work. This is a woman that wants to teach compulsory religion in public schools and use funding to go towards charter schools.

In retaliation to this woman preparing to make a mockery of the American education system and specifically American public schools, the hashtag #IAmAProductOfPublicSchools has been making its rounds on various social media sites. People are using this to show their journey through the public school system and how they weren't just wasted as many people like DeVos seem to think.

This is to say that I am also a product of public schools. I went to Fullerton Elementary School, Parkville Middle, Parkville High School and I now attend an absolutely amazing university.

Public schools are not a dead end. They are filled with amazing teachers and students. I have met the most incredible educators in my life at my public high school that continue to check up on me and support me in my life. Public schools ensure that every child receives an education in an effort to make them as successful as possible and make it as accessible as it can be.

I am a product of the American public school system and I am going places. I am a product of the American public school system and I am worth it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
