I Have Braces In College, So What?

The temporary metal on my mouth doesn't define me.

If I had a penny for everytime someone gave me a funny look because I have braces, I would be able to finally go on a mega shopping spree. I never really thought too much about having them while I was in high school, simply because it was so common, but when I found out that I would need to wear them for a little while in college, I immediately freaked out.

I already have a baby face, and I knew this would make me look even younger. However, I definitely was not expecting the negative attitudes that came along with having something as simple as metal on your teeth. I mean, probably a ton of people have had them at some point in their lives.

So, why is it such a problem that I do? I didn't really care as much until I received some very unnecessary, rude comments about them. It wasn't affecting this person in any way, shape, or form, but they felt the need to say something. And honestly, if you deem it necessary to comment on something temporary about me, you better get back to high school and learn a few things about respect.

Talking down on me for having braces says more about you than me.

If you're pointing out other people's insecurities, there must be something seriously wrong with you. I've learned that sometimes you just have to ignore the harsh energy thrown your way because it's simply not as important as you think. I'm happy with the way I look and I don't mind wearing them. We're not in high school anymore, and people's looks or their business shouldn't bother you. It's just none of your concern.

No, I'm not a secret high school student.

I know I look about 15 years old, but I definitely am not. Mentioning this to me will not do you any better, or make you look any more amazing. In fact, it points out your own flaws and mirrors them for exactly what they are: insecurities. I'm still a good person, and I'm still beautiful in my own way.

I know that this is only temporary, and at the end, it'll be so worth it.

Knowing that there's an expiration date to this makes the journey that much more exciting. I've had braces since the end of my freshman year of high school, and I legit cannot imagine my life without them. My high school friends only know what I look like with them on, and have loved me regardless and made me feel my best at my lowest.

Although people enjoy putting their two cents in, it will all be worth it once I see the end result. I know that by the end of this, my smile will be flawless, and I can't wait to see all the pain, unwanted swollen gums, wearing of rubber bands and constant mouthwashes pay off.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
