Christmas Music Actually Kills My Holiday Spirit

I'm just not excited by the same 10 songs that seem to signal the start of the Christmas season, and even less so in July.

With the last holiday of the year just behind us, and everyone's focus shifting to making their New Years Eve playlists, I finally feel safe to confess my opinion that would have sparked outrage in the weeks prior; I could really do without Christmas music.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Christmas music or even have anything against it, it just doesn't do anything to put me in the spirit of the season. There are a few songs I like, I actually really love the effect it seems to have on the general population, and I enjoy the messages of non-secular songs that remind me of the significance of the holiday. I just don't particularly care for the fact that for nearly six weeks before Christmas Day same 20 songs are in constant rotation everywhere I go.

My co-worker began blasting “let is snow" and Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is you" - which was fine because let's be honest, that song is a bop year round- back in mid-November, and bracing myself for the next month and a half of tunes intended to coerce children into behaving. I remember the excitement on her face as she plugged her phone into the aux cord and indirectly declared it Christmas before we'd even had Thanksgiving.

After about the third time we'd rotated through her holiday playlist she asked what my favorite song was and I apprehensively revealed that I didn't have one. The shock on her face was nothing I wasn't used to at this point and the teasing that ensued was familiar. I was fairly relieved that was all my confession amounted to rather than a demand for some deep explanation as to why and an effort to convert me with Ariana's take on Christmas classics.

As one of the few who doesn't love Christmas music, I'm relieved for all of the party songs that will replace them in celebration of the new year, and I wish everyone the best of luck with their resolutions.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
