I Don't Get TikTok

Never in my life have I felt older than when I realized I disliked the popular app TikTok.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the app, it is a platform that essentially just lets users post and view short videos. The videos can range from comedy, to voice overs, to dances, to challenges, to people showing off their talents and so much more.

I loved the platform Vine when it was a 'thing'. It has pretty much the same premises but was more focused on comedy than doing dances and lip syncs, though those were on there as well. The app was nice because the videos were short and it was easy to get sucked in watching the popular page for hours. And in my opinion Vine had some great content. So great in fact that people have had Vine themed parties and there are compilations of some of the popular videos on YouTube.

When Vine was 'over' and the whole platform was taken down I remember being super upset, but then Musical.ly came out and tried to do what Vine had done. Some people used it but once it turned into TikTok then it blew up.

I wanted to like TikTok because of how much I had missed those days when I would just watch funny Vines but when I downloaded the app to my phone I was disappointed.

My 'For You Page', which is where the app uses an algorithm to show people things they would like had not been personalized yet since I had not liked anything. The videos that they had up that were popular though were not to my liking.

I got video after video of underage girls dancing somewhat provocatively in their rooms. Here and there would be some comedy videos, a cute puppy, or some shirtless 15 year-old boy thirst traps. But I kept mostly getting the girls dancing and I didn't want to see that, so I just never used the app again.

Now every time that I tell people this they ensure me that I just need to like things on there so I can get videos that I actually want to see.

I want to make it clear though that I do not think all of the content on TikTok is bad, I just think a lot of it relies heavily on sex appeal, which of course can be seen in any other career on things like YouTube, however from what I saw it was just more than I had ever seen and the kids were so young.

I guess most of my issue with it is how there are super young kids on there and they are dancing certain ways and dressing certain ways that make me uncomfortable because of their young age. I mean I could care less what people wear normally and I am all about women empowerment, but when it comes to kids it is just a bit different because any random person can find them on there, including predators.

I do know there is some good content on the platform though, as my friends are always sending me things that they think I would like on there and most of the time I do like them. I think Vine was just more for me because it was more based around comedy and not everyone back in the day was trying to get Vine famous. However, with TikTok I feel like every girl from ages 12-28 wants to have their 10 seconds of TikTok fame.

Whenever I tell people these thoughts I have on the app, it makes me feel old because I feel like a grandmother or something who doesn't understand a new technology. When in fact it really is not new, just a bit different.

Either way, I don't hate on people who like TikTok or make videos on there, personally I think it just isn't for me, though I welcome the funny videos my friends send my way.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
