On August 7, 2016 Chicago Bears’ defensive end/linesman Mitch Unrein made headlines, a first for the relatively unknown football player. His wife, Corey Cogdell-Unrein won the bronze medal in trap shooting at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Just in his second season with the bears, Unrein was tragically unable to travel to Rio to see his wife in action due to the Bears’ preseason being underway.
But who cares; The man is making headlines for a change! It’s not like football is a year-round event like trap shooting must be (or even the Olympics for that matter).
You know what else is super cute? Many of Unrein’s teammates wore “Team Unrein” shirts to support him! It doesn't matter that she is professionally/legally known as Cogdell-Unrein, there is an Unrein at the Olympics!
Mitch first met Cogdell-Unrein when the two went on a blind date in 2011 (the day before Super Bowl XLV mind you) and tied the knot three years later in 2014. The couple enjoy hunting together as a pastime, but Unrein also has a job to do (not like Cogdell-Unrein doesn’t keep herself busy either with her show Wild West Alaska which airs on Animal Planet) being a Bears defensive end and all.
But you know what else is just the sweetest? Even though he could not be there to support his wife of two years, he sent out multiple congratulatory tweets upon her bronze medal victory! What a gentleman, right? Way to go Mitch!
The great city of Chicago must be so proud; the Tribune definitely is!
So congratulations to Unrein on his wife’s bronze medal finish in the sport she loves!
Also, major congratulations to Cogdell-Unrein for being so unbothered by the fact that a reporter overlooked your own status as an athlete just to draw out a Chicago connection! What an amazing class act you are for women everywhere, and there is hope yet for other women to rise above the sexist nonsense other female athletes are experiencing at these Olympic Games. Congratulations on your bronze medal finish and return to the podium!
