How Floridians Act When a Hurricane is Coming

Hurricane Dorian is scheduled to make landfall on the east coast of Florida sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning. As usual, funny hurricane memes have been circulating the internet and Floridans are stocking up on the necessities (especially beer).

While category four and five hurricanes can cause absolute devastation, the category one Dorian (who may be as strong as a three when it hits) is not a huge threat to native Floridians. At least not yet.

Our Publix cakes are decorated with the projected path of the storm to add to our hurricane party (yes, we actually invite all of our friends over for games and food before, during, and after the storm). We head to the beach just a few hours before landfall to see the crazy cool waves. We make memes about how the storm wants to visit Disney World. We run outside when the eye is over us to witness the beauty of the center of a hurricane. We run outside in our bathing suits to enjoy and participate in some of the coolest weather we'll ever see.

We might sound crazy to others, but hurricanes are a pretty normal occurrence. Yes, flooding happens. Yes, schools end up closed for a few days. But we are so accustomed to the weather that we know how to prepare quickly and calmly while also poking fun at the situation.

Hurricane Safety

When a catastrophic hurricane hits, you want to be prepared. This includes stocking up on water and non-perishable food items-- enough to last seven days. You also want to make sure you have portable cell phone chargers and flashlights in case the power goes out. To minimize damage, use wood boards or professional shutters to protect your windows. When the hurricane is hitting, be sure to be away from windows and doors. In case of life-threatening conditions, stay in a closet or room that lacks windows. 7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
