Home Is Where The Heart Is, And I Left Mine In Huntington

In college, school becomes your home and your home becomes your favorite place to visit.

From August to May we pack up all of our belongings to go to school. We spend ten months away from our home. In college, school becomes your home and your home becomes your favorite place to visit. Home is where the heart is and our hearts are in Huntington. Here's five reasons why Huntington is better than your hometown.

1. Your Friends Are There

It is painfully hard to leave your friends before any break, but leaving them before summer break is the worst. You leave the people who see you at your best and worst. The friends that you make at school have become your family. Life is better when it is spent with them. You miss them knowing every second of your life because they check your location to see if you are at Drinko or Jake's without them. Your college friends hold a big place in your heart, a place that even countless FaceTimes cannot fix. We are a family.

2. You Call the Shots

While away at school, you choose what you do and when you do it. Home is not like that. When you return home you have to ask if you can go down the road, spend the night with your friend or that boy you like, and you get told not to sleep your day away. When you are at school you can walk down the hall and see your best friends, call them at 2 a.m. for a Cook-Out milkshake, or count on them to track your location but never question your decisions. We are young adults.

3. You Don't Get Questioned

"Who is that girl in the picture?" In Huntington, your friends know each other and you do not have to explain that the girl in the picture is Madison. "Why don't you have a boyfriend?" Maybe because I am focusing on school and the entire male population is too worried about if they are drinking Natural Light or Busch this Thursday to pre-game the social. We are making our own future.

4. You Can Eat What You Want

While at school you constantly complain that you want homecooked meals and that you hate the dining hall food, but it is a completely different story when you get home. When you get home, you want your favorite foods and will do anything to avoid cooking because you do not want to wash the dishes. You miss the $5 Cook-Out trays, being in walking distance to Chipotle, eating D.P. Dough on your way home after a long night out, and sleeping after Fat Pattys' burgers and wings. We are spending too much money eating out.

5. The Atmosphere Is Better

The atmosphere surrounding a college town is incomparable. Even on the worst days, you love it. When you are bored, you still have your best friends there. There is so much to do, see, and be a part of in a college town like Huntington. We are living our best lives.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
