Holiday Traditions

It's the little things

Holiday Traditions
My Finger Lakes NY

Christmas time is my favorite time of the year, not because of the presents but because of all the little things that come with the holiday season; the winter wonderland, drinking hot coco and cuddling by a warm fire, the beautiful decorations and lights, and cheer all around! My family’s traditions may be silly to some, but they are things I hold near and dear to my heart. It’s a time of magic, cheer, and for being thankful.

Tromping through the snow and cold to find the perfect blue spruce is something we have done since I can remember. Bundled up nice and warm, we head to the other side of town where we have gone almost ever year for a tree. They have this hot chocolate that fills you up with warmth and spirit. It’s not the world best cup by any means, but its something that I always looked forward to. However, since going away to college I haven’t really been able to participate with that for a few years now, which breaks my heart but it doesn’t stop me from making the tree as pretty as possible.

Every year my mother goes from craft show to craft show in search of the perfect ornaments for my sisters and myself. She always finds these handcrafted ornaments that highlight something we’re passionate about. Our tree is filled with little ghosts of Christmas past, they act as reminders of where we have been and how we have evolved through the years. It’s something I can’t help but look forward to every year!

Another holiday tradition is watching all the old classic Christmas movies on ABC family. Though they have switched to Freeform they have said they would keep the classic 25 days of Christmas, and I’m holding them too that! My all time favorite is The Year Without a Santa Claus. There’s nothing better than bundling up nice and cozy by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa, my lungs filled with the scent of pine tree and peppermint, watching movies from my childhood.

My all time favorite tradition though has to be one best aspects of living in the Finger Lakes region – Wegman’s 27th annual Lights on the Lake! If you ever make your way to the Syracuse area during the season (November 16 - January 8) experiencing Lights on the Lake is a must. Located in Onondaga Lake Park, Liverpool NY, Lights on the Lake is a two-mile drive-thru show featuring amazing light displays – it is something you need to experience in person. For more information go to Lights on the Lake.

Christmas isn’t about the presents; it’s about being with family, hanging out and enjoying their company. Though they may not be traditional traditions, I love spending time with my family, making great food, watching movies, listening to Christmas music, and enjoying the little things. So grab some cocoa, build a fire, and remember tomorrow isn’t promised. So stop placing so much importance on materialistic things and go remind your family how important they are to you.

I hope you have a happy holiday, stay safe and have a happy new year!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
