Why Humans Are an Invasive Species

Why should we destroy the most precious thing that we have?

Why Humans Are an Invasive Species

Invasive species are defined as plants, animals, or pathogens that are non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause harm. A Zebra Muscle is one common invasive species, these devour the plankton limiting the amount of food that is available for other species living in the same environment. Invasive species are detrimental to the ecosystem around them, with that being said tell me why humans aren't the worst invasive species of them all?

We have slowly moved outward across the world, taking out entire species as we go. We have committed mass genocides and pushed native people out their homes. We have covered this Earth of ours in cement and caused damage to so many ecosystems. Our waste is expelled into oceans and into our environment contaminating and causing damage to the precious ecosystems that surround us. But if we can't see it it doesn't matter right? Wrong.

We are invasive in the sense that there is a very large number of species that have gone extinct or become endangered because all we can think about is ourselves and if it will be beneficial to the human race. Well, I'm here to tell you something, if we want our Earth to remain our home then we must nurture and care for it, we must learn to live in cohesion and not leave destruction in our wake. It is our responsibility to take care of our home. We must learn to leave behind our invasive history and work to live in unison with those around us as to not rush the Earth toward its expiration date.

You will not find another home that gives so much for you to live so why should we take and take and not give back in return. Why should we destroy the most precious thing that we have? Do not be foolish enough to believe the lies being spilled of global warming being a hoax or to not be kind to our brothers and sisters? We have to learn this before it is too late because the Earth will not be around forever but do you want it to be around for your children and grand children.

So take a minute and look around, look and see how invasive we have become and how destructive we continue to be, look and see that our world is hurting and we need to make every effort to help. Look at our ecosystems around us and how they are crumbling and how hate is spreading through the world in waves and think for a minute what it would be like to live in peace and in cohesion with everyone and everything around you. Do not be greedy and take for granted what was given to us.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
