High school seniors,
You are just months away from graduation and possibly venturing off to college. While many people have already been accepted into their dream university, I know there are still plenty of students who donāt have a clue where to start when it comes to applying for the next level of education.
Yes, the word "college" sounds a little scary at first, especially when you think about the new independence you have to take on, another four years of sitting in a classroom, and last but certainly not least, the intense financial responsibilities.
But donāt be afraid because you still have time and Iāve come up with three supportive tips to increase your esteem when it comes to college.
1. Take the test again
Re-taking the ACT or SAT ā I honestly donāt know which one is going on at this point ā should never be looked down upon. Take the test as many times as you need to because unfortunately, thatās how some colleges determine your āworthinessā of attendance. So choose a different testing environment, eat breakfast next time, sleep well, and whatever you do, donāt panic. Youāve got this!
2. Apply!
My best advice to seniors is to apply to their top five colleges as early as possible. If enrollment applications are open September 23, you should begin applying on September 23, Donāt wait until the last minute and donāt settle on your dreams. There have been too many times that Iāve seen students procrastinate their college application because theyāre afraid - afraid of independence, afraid of debt, afraid of being denied, and afraid of failing.
Although it is obviously past September and we're now into the new year, don't let that discourage your ambitions. Do it now! Taking the first step of applying is a brave decision and if you can accomplish that goal, youāre already on your way.
3. Apply for scholarships
College isn't free, and it's definitely not cheap. There are literally scholarships for anything and free money is the best money. Seeing the horrifying five-letter word āessayā probably scares away 25% of potential recipients, but itās easier than you think. The majority of scholarship essays ask questions about you, your goals, or your past experiences, so donāt be hesitant to be a little narcissistic for once.
Youāre capable, intelligent, worthy, and necessary for our future. If college is your goal, you still have time to accomplish it. Donāt be afraid. Be ambitious.
