To My High School Best Friends...

A letter to the girls who keep me sane.

To My High School Best Friends...
Sarah Sistrunk

To my high school best friends, thank you for getting me through my high school years. Those four years would have been boring and miserable without y'all! I could have never survived those locker filled halls and crazy teacher's classrooms if I hadn't had y'all by my side. Friday night football games turned into weekend long parties. Thank you for the unlimited amount of sleepovers and car jam sessions. And speaking of car jam sessions... I'm glad I found friends who could go from High School Musical to rap to country and who didn't mind my horribly off key voice. Every car ride turned into a concert or a deep conversation about life. The best time for deep convos were at night though, when we would be just about to fall asleep and then all the sudden have the need to spill out all of the questions that have haunted us. It was then that I learned so much about life and took what you guys have to say to heart.

To my high school best friends, thank you for always speaking truth into my life. I know I can always come to you guys for anything. Y'all will tell me straight up if I'm about to do something stupid, but you will also let me make my own mistakes and be there for me when I didn't listen to y'all in the first place. You guys are my go to for everything, whether it's something serious or just freaking out because I saw the cutest baby ever. I know I can always come to y'all to receive the same amount of emotion I feel on any subject I present to you, especially cute boys! Even though our taste in guys are very different, I will always have to have your approval on the boys I date. If y'all disapprove, then bye bye boy!

To my high school best friends, thank you for not only sticking with me through high school but also college. First semester of freshman year was the longest amount of time we had ever been apart since we had met. It was hard to be apart, but the reunion was great and it was so amazing to realize that nothing had changed between us. We were going to make this different college and towns thing work! Yes, I am jealous of your new friends, just as I know y'all are jealous of mine, but I'm glad y'all have people looking out for you at college. But just don't forget about me when you're at school.

To my high school best friends, thank you for being the best friends I could have ever imagined. I am so blessed that God brought y'all into my life and I pray that y'all never leave. As we get ready to leave for school and take on another year apart, I am so glad that we had these few months to reconnect. I am constantly overwhelmed that I get to have such beautiful, Godly, awesome girls as my friends. I love you girls!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
