At a school like Michigan State University, the words "study abroad program" are thrown at you left and right even before you step on campus. These days, studying abroad is considered an integral part of a college education, and MSU boasts one of the best study abroad programs in the country. Michigan State has over 275 programs that take place in more than 60 countries around the world. For a while now, I've been in love with traveling and exploring the world, and I can't wait to take advantage of what MSU has to offer.
For starters, I'm looking forward to immersing myself in a brand new culture. Completely immersing yourself in the education system of a country is a great way to really experience and understand the people, its traditions, and its culture. Throughout my four years of high school, I fell in love with the Spanish language. I can't think of a better way to learn more about it than to speak it in another country.
Personal growth is another thing that comes from studying abroad. After seeing how friends and family members were transformed by their study abroad trips, I knew it would be something I would love. Studying abroad not only teaches you independence, but gives you the courage to try new things even after you return home. It teaches you people skills that no other experience could provide.
Last, and probably most important, are the friendships and memories made through study abroad opportunities. I can't think of a better way to bond than getting lost in a brand new city or racing through an airport to catch a red-eye flight. Getting to know people who you go to school with, as well as people who live in whatever country you travel to, will be something I'll cherish forever.
I hope to study abroad as soon as I possibly can, and as much as I possibly can. Whether it be in 6 months or 3 years, I'm thrilled for what my future travels hold in store.
