How Young Adults Can Handle Recycling After a Large Move

A big move can be a time of new prospects and chapters in your life.

It can be stressful too, and it usually requires you to use quite a lot of resources to get everything from one place to the next safely. If you're stuck with a lot of moving supplies you won't use once the job is done, there is no need to toss them away. There are ways to recycle them for use later or to help the environment.

Compost

Compost is a form of recycling that can really give back to the environment. Not every single thing is ideal as compost in a garden or backyard, but the list of things that are is long. Even items such as cardboard boxes, paper towels, or napkins can morph into compost that is good for recycling. After your initial move, don't forget that vegetable peelings, shells, or empty bags of tea can also make great compost if done right.

Separating and Recycling

You'll probably use a combination of plastics and paper products during your move. Some items might be made from aluminum components as well. In any case, you can separate them into the appropriate piles. Even if you have a lot of stuff, this is easy enough to do with the help of skips. You can hire several of these large containers to store the refuse that you want to recycle later. Getting multiple skips could help you with the separation part of the process and make it easier to cart everything away.

Storage Boxes

Not every aspect of recycling has to be about throwing stuff out in an environmentally friendly way. Young adults tend to see the value in a good cardboard box where kids might only see a plaything. You can repurpose some of the boxes you used during the move to store clothes, equipment, or toys as a way to keep the new place looking organized and clean for as long as possible. If you're the festive type, these boxes make great containers to keep your seasonal decorations in when they're not in use.

Paying It Forward

Some local businesses would welcome your moving supplies as free donations that they can use in their daily operations. Any bubble wrap or packing peanuts you used that might still be in serviceable condition would be great additions to the post office in your area. There might be a few specialty businesses close to you that would be willing to recycle any sort of polystyrene materials at no cost to you and use them in other products.

With a little thinking that ventures outside of that cardboard box you used to transport your stuff, there are different ways to recycle your moving supplies. Don't be afraid to get a bit creative with your ideas here. You don't necessarily need to recycle everything in the most traditional sense. Some of the plastic wrapping or foam padding that you might have used could become your next arts and crafts project.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
