Whether you live in a hot country or it’s summer time, and you're enjoying a luxe holiday in a sunny, sand-filled place, you'd still want to show off your favourite gold pieces. However, neither the hot salty air of the beach nor the thick humidity of the city are good for your precious jewellery. Today, we’ve put together a few useful tips to help you take care of your gold pieces and keep them looking sparkly during the summer heat.
Avoid wearing Gold Jewellery on the beach
Though you may want to show off your gorgeous 21K gold bracelet that you love, it would be best if you keep that particular precious piece at home if you’re going to the beach. Gold is a soft metal, and the higher the karat of your gold piece, the more vulnerable it is to scratches, nicks and warping scratches. With all the sand at the beach, your gold jewellery would be at serious risk of damage. Furthermore, sea salt is damaging to gold jewellery; to keep your precious gold in perfect condition, you should keep it away from salt. Salt corrodes copper, and it will inevitably damage your copper-infused jewellery pieces as well.
If you really want to accessorize when going to the beach, your safest choice is to wear either lower-karat gold or sturdy platinum pieces.
Do not Wear your Gold Jewellery in the Pool
During summer, we all feel the need to take a dip in the pool, but first, do your gold jewellery pieces a favour by taking them off before you dive in. Chlorine is terrible for all types of jewellery, including gold. Like salt, chlorine is corrosive to most jewellery metals. Therefore, to play it safe, keep gold jewellery away from chlorine, too. The chemical is so bad for your precious jewellery, that prolonged exposure can lead to dulling of shine, discolouration and cracking at worst. You could also lose your gold ring easily in the pool, as your extremities tend to shrink when you dive in cold water, so we advise you to keep your gold ring back into your jewellery box before taking a dip to avoid losing them.
Cleansing Gold Jewellery during summer:
Gold jewellery is more prone to damage during the summer season than any other time of year, because it is exposed to sweat, lotions, sunscreens, and, of course, salt water and pool water. Therefore, it is a must to properly clean it.
1. Wipe your gold pieces with a soft polishing cloth
Make sure to wipe off your gold jewellery pieces at the end of the day after wearing them. Especially if they’ve been exposed to sweat. Make sure to use a polishing cloth, instead of a bath towel, to clean the pieces, since the loops in the fabric of towels can catch on the details of your gold piece.
2. Use mild soap diluted with water to give your gold pieces a deep cleaning
Gold jewellery is delicate, so when you are about to slather on sunscreen or moisturize your skin, do so before you put on your gold jewellery, and let your skin absorb the lotions and creams first. It is better to let your skin dry before you put on gold jewellery because the chemicals in commercial creams and lotions can really damage it. However, if you do not have time for this step, and you’re the type to have your pieces on while putting on skincare products, then you should definitely consider deep cleaning your gold jewellery.
