Somehow, it’s already December. How is that even possible? I feel like this first half of freshman year has flown by way too quickly! But even though this first semester seems to be melting away, December is always a time of year that I look forward to. Well, except for finals. In high school, finals aren’t too much of a hassle and by the time December rolls around, you’re basically checked out and already in the Christmas spirit. But in college it’s a different story. December translates into stress. Everyone I know is currently freaking out about finals, especially us freshmen, because we don’t know what exactly to expect.

Even though the weight of finals feels crushing, you should take some away from studying and treat yourself. Taking a break every now and then while studying can help to keep you more focused and refreshed so you don’t burn out as quickly. So take a step back from hours you’ve spent staring at the piles of notes and lectures looming on your desk and try out a few of these ways to get a study break!

Go For A Run

In all honesty, I don't really like running. But it can be a great way to get some fresh air and clear your mind for a bit. You can take out the stress of all the information you feel like you don't know for the upcoming final by pounding the pavement. And hey, exercise means endorphins and endorphins make people happy right?

Grab A Bite To Eat With Friends

Food is always a good distraction from life's struggles, so why not use it as a quick break from studying? Need a place to hit up for some coffee and brunch in the morning? Check out The Flying Biscuit! Or if you're taking your study break near lunch time, pop over to West Midtown and get some fab queso from Taqueria Del Sol! If getting to those places sound like too much effort, the dining hall or student center is always an option for a quick Starbucks or some Chickfila. Plus, after studying for as long as you have been, anything tastes good.

Switch Up The Location

Studying is boring enough as is, and doing it the same place for hours upon end can almost be painful. As part of your study break, take a nice stroll and switch up the location to something different every now and then. Head over to the library for a change. Even studying outside can be a nice difference from the monotony of a dorm room.

Catch Up On Some Sleep

Pretty much self-explanatory. Everyone loves naps.

Have A Jam Sesh

Take some time to relax by having your own personal dance party! Or grab some friends, the more the merrier.

Whatever it is that you choose to do, make sure you take time off for you! Finals aren't everything. These two weeks will pass soon enough and then onto Christmas!!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
