How To Survive Winter In College

Surviving winter in college

How To Survive Winter In College

Fall has just begun, Winter is around the corner. I may be the only one saying this, but I look forward to the snow. If you were lucky when you were younger you had snow days. A day when the weather was so crazy you had to stay home. Flushing ice cubes down the toilet, wearing your pajamas backwards, or putting your ski boots under your bed-- you did everything in your power to try to make it happen. Unfortunately there comes a time when there aren't any more snow days: the college years. Instead of having all your classes in one building, you actually have to brave the storm to get to your class. This might even be your first winter experience. Whether there is an inch of ice layered over everything, or three feet of snow, you're going to need some essential items to survive the Winter at college.

1. Winter boots:

These are probably the most essential item. As a "Mainah" (what you call someone from Maine) I know from experience that you will most likely fall up the stairs, down the stairs, or even just glide across a patch of black ice. Boots with good traction could possibility save you from a near death experience over the ice, or falling flat on your face in front of your crush. I would highly recommend you get some winter boots. If you need an idea L.L Bean Boots are perfect, stylish, and keep you warm. Plus they have a lifetime warranty and free shipping. I don't think anything gets better than that.

2. Winter Jacket

Again, kind of self explanatory. You want to stay warm. It may be a pain to walk to class in a big fluffy jacket but it's a good idea to layer up. You can still look stylish in a winter jacket!

3. Gloves, hats, and scarves:

You have to keep your head and hands warm. You can even join the movement and wear your school hats they sell in the bookstore. You will probably end up "twinning" with a ton of people, but having a little school spirit is never a bad thing.

Those are the three most essential things I would make sure I had to survive a winter day in college. I try my best to enjoy the snow, but sometimes at college it gets in the way and I forget how much I like it. Walking to your dining hall in the freezing weather, wishing you just had to walk downstairs to the kitchen, like home. Or maybe just slipping and embarrassing yourself in front of a cute hockey boy. Take some time out of your day or weekend and go get a cheap sled with your friends. Make a snowman, snow angles, and have snowball fights. As long as you're bundled up, the snow is a great thing. Winter can be a pain, but it also can be really fun. Have fun with it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
