It's a beautiful Friday afternoon, you're jamming in the car to Justin Timberlake's latest hit, when suddenly it's accompanied by the unfamiliar background sound of sirens. Red and blue lights begin flashing in your rearview mirror. Ugh, you're being pulled over. If you are written a ticket or a court summons, here are some tips on how to survive traffic court!
1. Own up to your mistake.
Unless you feel the cop was completely wrong in pulling you over, accept the fact that you made a mistake and are now suffering the consequences. While it is not the greatest situation in the world, it is not the end of it.
2. Hope for the best, expect the worst.
Understand that going to court may not completely excuse your citation, but a good plea could certainly help reduce it or erase the points on your license. If you decide to pay the fine over the phone or online, you will have no chance of minimizing the charge.
3. Be calm, cool, and collected.
On court day, even if you are nervous, don't let it show. Dress and act professional. There's nothing worse than endless rambling or scrambling to find the right words. Arrive early, be prepared with what you're going to say, and exert confidence.
4. Respect the judge.
Whether or not the judge says what you want to hear, starting a riot won't make the situation better. Show you are more than your mistake by being respectful and always addressing him/her as "your honor."
