If you are currently a student at Washington State University, or if you are planning on attending WSU in the future, you are probably aware that the weather in Pullman can get unbearably cold toward the end of the fall semester. As fall quickly transitions into winter, the temperature begins to drop, and students pack away their shorts and tank tops and replace them with leggings and sweaters. When Pullman drops below zero (which it will), it is essential that students be prepared to face the elements. Here are a few essential items to get you through this winter:
Snow boots.
I hate to break it to you, but it will snow in Pullman. Some years are worse than others, but it will snow. Snow boots, like Sorel boots, are better insulated than your everyday shoes, and they are built to endure harsher weather. They are a lot more practical, and will have more traction than your worn down Ugg boots, which will help when trying to strategically navigate the icy sidewalks on campus. You don't want to be that kid who slips and falls face first on the icy concrete in front of everyone. Be smart; wear the appropriate gear, and watch your footing.
Parkas.
You really can’t go wrong with oversized coats in Pullman. It may seem a little extreme, but once you get past the fact that you look like a soccer mom, you will love how cozy your Eskimo-esque jacket can be. The longer and the puffier the better. You will want as much coverage as possible when walking on the hill to and from your classes. If you don't feel bold enough to rock the parka, a down vest should suffice if you layer well underneath.
Boot socks.
Your Hunter rain boots might come in handy when walking through the slush, but keep in mind that your toes will freeze through the rubber if you aren’t wearing a thick pair of boot socks. Wool socks, or any type of long knit sock will do. The thicker the better! Your toes will thank you later.
Heated blanket.
This one is especially important for the men and women in the Greek community. If you sleep on a sleeping porch, this blanket will be essential to your survival. Sleeping on a porch feels much like sleeping in a snow bank. A heated blanket will become your best friend, and will keep you warm throughout the coldest nights.
Gloves, hats, and scarves.
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but by wearing winter accessories such as gloves, hats, and scarves, you will keep your core warm. There is nothing worse than letting your fingers and ears go numb.
A cuddle buddy.
This one is my personal favorite. A cuddle buddy doesn't have to be a significant other; it definitely can be, or it can just be a best friend willing to snuggle up with you on a cold day. The best way to stay warm is to engage in close contact with another warm body. Pile on the blankets, turn on the TV and rock the holiday-themed fuzzy socks. You will warm up in no time!
It is time to stock up on the essentials, now. When the snow takes over Pullman this winter, you will find me curled up in my bed binge watching Netflix with Starbucks in hand, and I suggest you do the same. Buy a box of hand warmers and a lot of hot chocolate, because we are in for a long, cold few months. Stay safe and warm this winter, Pullman.
