It is that time of year again when the flu is going around and dorms become a danger zone for sickness. In college, when you have limited resources and live in tiny spaces, trying to become healthy again becomes a challenge. I am no stranger to getting sick, especially during exam week. When I get sick, it lasts two weeks, not a few days like most people. I know after getting sick enough that there are ways to handle the “Charleston plague” and still survive school.
Tip #1: Breathing strips are important
You can find them at CVS or any drug store, but breathing strips will save you from not being able to sleep. Just put the strip on your nose when you're sleeping or hanging out and your nose clears up almost instantly. This allows you to do your work and be a functioning person. This is the only way you will get sleep and be able to function well in classes.
Tip #2: Clorox wipes are your friend
When you live in a small place, germs spread very easily. The possibility of getting sick is always prevalent, which is why Clorox wipes are a life saver. Wipe down all surfaces and handles to make sure no germs are spread. This way, everything is clean and there is less of a chance that you will get sick.
Tip #3: WATER, WATER, WATER
I get that people always say to drink water, but in college, it is especially important. When sickness is all around, water helps keep you healthy. It also is great to help cure a hangover. Gurgling salt water can really clear your sinuses and help your throat. It is important that you start to do this when you're just beginning to feel sick.
Tip #4: Sleep
Right when you know you’re getting sick and don’t feel good, make sure you get plenty of rest. If you go out or don't rest when you are sick, your cold will only get worse. Sleep is what helps keep you healthy and what helps a cold go away.
It is never good to get sick in the beginning of the semester, so take care of yourself! Drinking water and getting sleep are the most important things to do in order to stay healthy. Good luck and have a good semester!
