For many high schoolers, exams are mere days. It seems no matter how hard one works all semester, exams are always destined to bring nerves. So here are 5 tips from someone who has been taking semester exams since 6th grade (totally not bitter about it).
- Your Value is NOT a Number. Multiple choice questions and essay responses do not determine your value. It seems cliché, but it is a battle that must be fought daily. Speaking as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, it can be difficult to work extremely hard for something and it not come to fruition the way we had imagined. Consider 2 Corinthians 2:19, "But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me."
- Never underestimate the power of organization. So, here's a practical tip for surviving exams: Organization is key. Lay out all of your notes, tests, and materials so you can see them. It is so much easier when you can visualize exactly how much material you need to cover.
- Do not become overwhelmed. So maybe your Science teacher assigned a chapter right before the exam, in addition to the hundreds (slight exaggeration) you covered in class. Breathe and take it one step at a time. Beginning with a chapter you are confident in will help you ease into the material and gain your footing.
- Be willing to put in the time. Speaking from experience, never rush through studying. Even if it means a little less free time, it will pay off. Skimming the class material never ends well.
- Always remember that breaks are vital. I've learned that for some reason, studying for four hours with no breaks, is not easy on your brain. Just don't let your breaks distract you.
