Road trips can be tedious and as get you older, so does "I spy." I know, I know, "trips are about the journey, not the destination, but when you're stuck in a hot five seat car with seven relatives, or on a bus sandwiched between two sweaty strangers...Well, the circumstances have changed. Here some games, activities, and suggestions to get you through your day long trips.
1. 20 Questions
If it's early in the trip, and if you're with someone you don't know well, it's a good time to start breaking out the ice breakers. No one will be too annoyed at that point to talk, or listen, and it's the easiest game in the book. It worked like a charm when I had to do a seven hour carpool home with an acquaintance in college.
2. Two Truths and a Lie
If asking a million consecutive questions in a role seems tedious, stick to three statements. As stated in the name, tell two true things about yourself and one lie; then have the other person guess the lie. Try using the most outrageous, seemingly far fetched things about yourself as your truths, and use something boring as the lie. That way they'll never guess which is the lie, you'll win, and you'll also find out some very interesting things about each other.
3. Karaoke
After you've spammed your car buddy(s) with questions or found out their most intimate secrets through two truths one lie, the best way to make some life long memories is through song. Life long friendships spring from two people knowing all the words to Alphabet Aerobics
4. The ABC Game
Basically, someone picks a category (road signs, movies, actors, clothing brands etc.), and you travel down the alphabet from A to Z. This game's difficulty level can be adjusted for any age as you decide the specifics and categories.
5. Word Association
Typically, this is something psychologist's use to get to know the inner working of their patient's mind, but it also makes for an easy way to pass the time. One person starts with a word, and the other immediately responds with the first word that comes to mind, and on and on. Ex: space, star, moon, cow. The game only ends when one person can't think of another word, or is just completely unrelated.
6. Guess Who
The boring version of this game is someone picks a person, then the guesser asks a series of yes or no questions until they can guess who the person is. However, to amp the game up, use impersonations from accents to hand gestures to figure out the person. It's much funnier to watch someone impersonate Cher than to ask lots of questions about her.
7. Team Song Writing
So, you're not really writing the song. One person starts out with any song they pick, and after they finish a sentence of the verse, another person has to continue on with another song. It's like the Riff Off in Pitch Perfect. Pitch Perfect example: "Oh, Mickey you're so fine"..."And you're mine. I'll be yours to the end of time." The game ends when no one else when someone is stumped or says the lyrics incorrectly.
8. Team Storytelling
One person starts the story with a sentence, and the next person continues, and so on so forth until the story is finished. "There once was a grumpy bull frog....Who drove a motorcycle to his day job...etc." To make the game a little harder, make a rule that all sentences have to end in rhyme. It seems a bit childish, and granted it may be, but when the radio stations aren't picking up you have to do something to entertain yourself.
9. Who Are They
Once again, use your imagination to tell a story. Look at the passing cars or any interesting people in your surroundings and see what they're doing. Make up a story as to who they really are, what crazy thing they're up to, and how they're going to execute their plans. Make sure to include background. The more specific and wild the story, the better.
10. Tunnels
Not the hardest, or most creative game, but every time the car passes under the tunnel, see who can hold their breath the longest.
11. License Plate Decoder
Take each letter and number out of a license plate and make a sentence out of it. But first, Elijah jabbed 68 one year olds. Who ever can come up with the best sentence wins.
12. Mad Lib
Regardless of age, one can always appreciate the randomness of Mad Libs. There are ways to adult it up and this one doesn't even require another person. There are definitely apps for this.
13. Speaking of Apps
While you can take travel sized, hand held magnetic board games (which are always a viable option), there are also apps for every game out there! Checkers, Chess, Monopoly, Life, Candy Land, Battleship..You name it, it's out there. The best part is, most of these apps don't even require another person or internet. You can play against robots for those of you who don't have a travel buddy.
