With the recent shootings and protests, #BlackLivesMatter is blowing up the Internet on all social media sites. Many black people I know are posting about the violence and telling their stories about how they, just by being born with darker skin, are more likely to be subject to an attack by a police officer. But, as a white person, you might be thinking: where do I fall into all of this? And how can I help? So, here are a few ways that you, the majority, can help support the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
Speak up.
Don't be silent about the unethical violence that's happening in our country. Share posts about the victims on Facebook, Twitter and any other social media site you use. By speaking up, you can show the black community that you stand with them and value their opinions. Plus, the more attention these stories get, the more informed everyone will be.
Educate yourself.
By learning the victim's names and the circumstances of the violence, you can back up a well-educated opinion with evidence. By watching videos and reading articles from credible sources, you'll be able to talk about the issue with an informed viewpoint.
STOP saying #AllLivesMatter.
Although all lives do matter, the purpose of the #AllLivesMatter movement (or anti-movement) is to indulge the white people that believe they are being excluded from the #BlackLivesMatter campaign. By supporting #BlackLivesMatter as a white person, you are not saying that your life doesn't matter too, because it already does. The reality of the situation is that black lives do not matter as much as yours. So, brush your ignorance to the side and follow the correct crusade.
Protest.
If you really want to get involved, you can research where the nearest protest is to you and stand (physically) with the black community during a rally or demonstration. With white people present, everyone can see that this movement is supported by those of all colors.
Know your limits.
Most importantly, the #BlackLivesMatter movement is created by and for black people. That means that sometimes, there is no room for white people, and that's okay. History is made up of thousands of years of white people so sit one out and let the black people handle this one.
