When people ask you what grade you are in and you respond with “high school senior,” they immediately ask about college. Questions like “Where are you attending next year? What colleges did you apply to? What are your top choices?” Coming from a senior who has just finished the college application process, here are 3 top lessons that I have learned and would recommend to rising juniors.
1) Do things early
My mentors advised me to start applications in the summer. This piece of advice really helped with procrastinating before deadlines. Luckily, I did not have to worry about filling out numerous applications, as I have decided to stay in state. Signing up via Common App and submitting your FAFSA early is something to consider.
2) Have motivation
While writing several tedious supplement essays, I learned that it was important to stay motivated. This mindset increases positive thoughts and productivity. This also applies to whatever or wherever you are in life. Whether it’s high school, college, or your career, maintaining goals and motivation is something to remind yourself constantly.
3) Patience during the waiting period
Along with the virtue of motivation, patience is needed while hearing back from the colleges. This was the toughest for me because I am a quick tempered person. The key behind this tip is to tell yourself that it is okay and you have done your part.
3) Do not be discouraged
College rejections are not easy, but do not let them discourage you. Whatever the result is, you need to know how to control your mental health. Let yourself know that it is okay if you do not get what you wanted. Believe that everything happens for a reason and you will be just as successful anywhere else. Remember that if plan A does not work, there are 25 other letters in the alphabet!
