Gyms Still Yet To Reopen Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Among the many businesses closing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, gyms have also closed their doors.

Planet Fitness, TR Fitness and Extreme Fitness are among the few in Springfield that temporarily closed for the safety of their customers and employees.

Now that Missouri State has shut down most campus activity, students can no longer access the Foster Recreation Center or get a workout by walking to class.

With these facilities closed and classes online, many students have had a drastic shift in their workout routine.

Online workouts have been very popular, with many different options and styles of exercise, and services that would normally come at a cost are now offered to the public for free.

Claire Kidwell, Missouri State alum and journalist at KSMU, has been staying active by following yoga routines online with her roommates.

"Yoga with Adriene' videos," Kidwell said. "Me and my roommates would do her practices in our living room at Sunvilla. She is my favorite."

Many Instagram influencers and YouTubers are now offering advice and content to maximize the best possible workout from the comfort of your living room.

Cassey Ho, @blogilates on Tik Tok and Instagram, produces content specifically geared toward working out at home and demonstrates how to lose fat, tone muscle or just feel better with sets that can be done with little to no equipment.

Brittney Powell, a trainer at Springfield's S.W.E.T Hot Yoga and Fitness, expanded her workouts to be available through Instagram live as well as teaching her dance class on Zoom.

"I don't consider myself to be tech-savvy, but I love being able to stay connected with everyone," Powell said.

Powell said this is the perfect opportunity to try new classes you might not have in the past because you are in the comfort of your own home.

"My biggest tip: just move," Powell said. "Whatever gets you up and moving is great! Every little bit helps," Powell said.

Powell said she feels the options are limitless when it comes to working out at home, just as long as you're moving, your mind and body will be thankful.

If you find yourself bored during your time in quarantine, now is the time to take advantage of the extra free time and accomplish those fitness goals, all the while maintaining the use of social distancing.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
