How To Reduce Stress

Because it happens to the best of us.

How To Reduce Stress
Lauren Ortego

With the start of the school year, it's hard not to think about the stressful situations that are to come. Tests, homework, group projects, more homework — it all seems so overwhelming.

I know there are a lot of people who think that stress is a sign of weakness, of someone who can't handle difficult situations. I'm here to tell you not to worry about them.

Everyone gets stressed, and I mean EVERYONE. Even those who would rather not admit it.

Stress isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign that you're human.

This, of course, isn't me telling you to go seek out stressful situations. It's just a friendly reminder that being stressed is OK.

Now, this is coming from someone who procrastinates heavily (which I do not recommend), so I can tell you that I've been in a stressful situation or two or twenty.

I can also tell you some of things that have helped me in these times so you too can rid yourself of the headache that is stress.

1. Breathe. I know it sounds dumb, and of course you're already breathing, but that's not what I mean. Take a few minutes to just breathe in and out, and focus on your heartbeat. This will help to calm you down.

2. Make a list of all the things you need to get done. I usually put them in order of which is due first, so I can focus on what needs done right now and what can be done a bit later.

3. Do not lay all your work out in front of you. Looking at everything you need done can increase your stress. Just keep what you're currently working on in front of you.

4. Take breaks. I know, I know — you don't have TIME to take a break, but look, if you don't give yourself some time (even if it's only 10 minutes) to look away from your work, you're just gonna continue freaking out. Take a bathroom break, go pet your cat/dog, get a bottle of water or a snack. Just get up and stretch your legs.

5. Put the phone away. If there's one thing that is a complete and utter distraction to me, it's my phone. Whether it's friends texting me or notifications from Twitter, I can always count on my phone to get in my way. Text your friends and tell them you're going to do some work, so you won't be answering. Put your phone on SILENT, not vibrate, silent (if you have an iPhone, the Do Not Disturb feature is ideal), and stick it in a drawer somewhere.

While I can't guarantee that after doing this you will be completely stress free, I can tell you that it will, at the least, help.

I wish everyone the best of luck this semester, and have a great school year!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
